Read the following part of a text written by bell Hooks and write A PARAGRAPH relating it to the classes we had about English Language and Globalization. Think of the concepts of oppression and freedom to write your text, ok?
“[…] I resist the idea of the 'oppressor’s language', certain that this construct has the potential to disempower those of us who are just learning to speak, who are just learning to claim language as a place where we make ourselves subject” (HOOKS, 1994, p. 168).

"...two billion people [will] be speaking or learning English within a decade." English is the language of globalization, it is the language of computers, internet, communications, science, aviation, entertainment, radio and others. The ability to speak and understand is mandatory in certain fields, professions, and occupations. English is the language of conquest and domination, because a few years who do not know how to communicate in English will have serious disadvantages in the future and will be broken. It is a oppressor’s language because, nowadays we are obligate learning English, not because we like, but because it is mandatory to be competitive in the world.
ResponderExcluirKelly
Freedom and opression. Language is the way that we have to express our thoughts. When there is just one way to express our thoghts this is a opression. We have to forget what me know and learn a new way to express our ideas. This is similar to what English do with us. If we want to undertand what the main resarchers are done, or the main world thoughts, we need to learn English. If we want to be world understandable we need to lear English. This is a globalization result. The world became small and there is a lot of language, so we need one language to communicate with others. It's bad because we need, sometimes, forget our way to express our ideas, but it's good because we can communicate with more people and learn different experiences.

Particularly I believe that the word get the power! And talk about “oppressor’s language” can prevent people with potential who can express themselves of different and creative ways they will be suppressed because they will fell discouraged. This is explained for the contradiction: how to convey something good or intelligent using the “oppressor’s language”. Cause a revolt.
ResponderExcluirOr it can prevent a socialization as they close to learn about culture and way of life of those who speak the oppressor’s language” blocking a chance of success.

I believe that english is just a language like any other, the point is that nowadays it is the most spoken because of U.S.A. financial power.
ResponderExcluirTo fight this power, people have to be understood and it happens through language.
As english is spoken around the world, to learn this languade is a great way to be against the oppressors and make everybody knows it.
It's a way to change people's minds and make they think critically about bad things that happen and really do something to change people's lives.

now... I will write some ideas about the subject. It's important everybody knows, how the language could be the POWER for someone, with this possibility we could be a original subject within the society and claim our dues,so doing a chance to show our subject (who we are) and who we want to be through the culture.
When we had the 'opressor's language', we finally had the power to express our ideas and it becomes a space of resistance and a new way to chance our future appeared.

ResponderExcluirI think that there is no "oppressor's language" I think that language is only a tool and the country that possesses it is the actual oppressor.
ResponderExcluirEnglish is consider oppressor due its background and the history behind it. Like USA is the example of this oppression. For the serveral reasons we've discussed in class as globalization, the movies and the necessity of learning english to achieve an social status as getting a good job the english language received this label. As well any other language would receive the same label if its belonging country had become as powerfull as USA became all over the world during the history.
However if something considered "bad" can be used for our own good it can't be so bad, can it? Also we have the power to turn bad things into good things. So if for any unknown reason hidden deep in our minds we believe that this language is used for manipulate or consider it oppressor (which is a bad thing) its up to us to use it for our profit and benefit as well as for good.
The language is an expression of freedom, we are free to use it the way we want and express ourselves with it about any subject. If language is used to oppress we are misunderstanding the basic concepts of humanity, society and fraternity.

Please teacher, remember that I have already sent it for your e-mail last Saturday, Sept 06, before 00:00 ok.
ResponderExcluirI think the world, especially the occidental side, is based in a big succession of different domination ages. Each age brought linked with an economic domination large cultural and language diffusions. Last century until nowadays were watching the rise of English language and culture around the world, like in the past times again it is linked with an economic supremacy and domination. If this last process is good or bad for the humanity I guess we don’t know yet, but looking for the past we can see a lot of died cultures and languages that maybe could brought us nice things in technology, medicine and knowledge. The domination kills the different languages and cultures; I guess this is the possible way that humanity is following today. At this time it is working in a strange and much powered kind of dissemination that probably will bring the largest effects that the humanity never seen before. A lot of non-english languages are dying, quietly and silently this process is happening and it will never stop, at least until the economic control changes again.
Ok, people! Thanks for your comments!
ResponderExcluirWell... First of all I want to make something clear: I didn't take the
ResponderExcluirdiscusson about globalization and English language. But I'll try to discuss a little about how the english language became a worldwide tongue, have been teached in almost all countries like a second language. The history shows that England was a big country, with power to dominate others. With this domination, the English started to break some walls and like the people from the land of the Queen, it dominates the local culture and turned the official language from the dominate's place. After, with the powerful of the son of England, the USA, the english turned a worldwide language, mainly because the Internet and informatic. The Microsoft, the most popular industry of computer's softwares came from the USA, and the language of it's products is the english. Nowadays, anyone in the globalization world can lives without the acess in the Internet, and the "webwide" language is the english. And for me, it's very good! Simply, because english it's one of the easier language in the world, much more than portuguese or french, for example. Then, it's easy to a person learn by itself the tongue of world.
Talk about "opressor's language" is most important to us reflected by we role in society because we knows if we don't learn to speak, listen e read in english very good stay most dificult enter in labor market, principaly in nowdays where the globalization and the relation between the peoples around the world is very high and so the competition is very great. We need dominate many basic things that Brazil imported the english contry who internet, computer, cars and many other things. I imagine that the most opressor language is don't understand the english language in your contry.
ResponderExcluirTherefore we need to study a lot to mantein the same level that others peoples of english contry.

I think that the English language helped the globalization to started, because of only when everybody speaks the same language the things happened in this aspect. And nowadays, English is useful to commerce, technology, information, and many others things that are made in USA, are published in this tongue. And this fact is not only because the oppressor of language, but also to facilitate the comprehension in others countries. However each person who learns this language, learn different, and adapt it to your way. Therefore I think that the oppressor of this language is limited, exactly for the power of each speaker changes the language to which way that they want. And any person can use this way to contest anything that is wrong, it is not because the person speaks the American English that this person has agree with all this country do.

Hello!!!
ResponderExcluirWell, we need a language to communicate to the others countries and if this language is an oppressor language is because of the globalization. It`s how the globalization end the capitalism work, by oppression. It would be much more difficult if you should know many languages to deal with such things like computers, internet, entertainment and science. But the main point is the education. If you have a critical education that let you free to decide about in which things you want to be imprisoned, the language that you use to communicate to world can be a tool to communicate with more people and learn with different experiences. With the language of globalization you have access to information and then you can have more capacity to be a subject of the reality and not just a person that is manipulated.
Manuella Heloisa =)
English is a language capable of being heard in the whole world. And sometimes (or most of times) when we want to be heard we have to speak it, we like or not. I would like to learn another language insted english but I need it so much that I can't choice. This tongue has conquered a gret power and behind it there is a nation (USA) who spread it in all world by means of globalization. But if we speak English and know all the history that how it arrived at this point I don't think that we will be controled.
ResponderExcluirAlice Francener
Hello!
ResponderExcluirSo, in begin I didn’t perceive how much the language is powerful, it can be a useful and discreet instrument of domination. This action wins more power with the time, one example these action is the globalization that can enhance this process. Today, there isn’t possibility you communicate with the world if you don’t speak English, this is a requirement to who want or need to know or keep a relationship with the terrestrial globe. But, what do we do to protect this? Will be that actions used by France succeed in protected their language? Another question, Will be that actions used by France are only to change English by French to be the new domination language? Sincerely, I think that always will have a domination language, as had Latim, English and Russian, but a thing I don’t know, what’s the next domination language.
Fabyano Lopes
Well, I think the language nowadays has became a form of oppression. Often we’re forced to learn to read to write and pronounce a foreign language to be successful in a job. In most of the cases the English is the “all powerful”. We are prisoners to the countries that oblige the rules of how everything should be and accept the imposition of English in our lives. Why? Political questions or find that English is grammatically more simple? This is a result of globalization and the countries that dominate us and make us forget how is rich and beautiful Portuguese language.
ResponderExcluirAmanda Rafaela Rodrigues
English is the language of globalization. It rules the world economy, politics and it's also the language of technology, to name a few. English certainly is a language of dominance, but it didn't started with USA, but with the politcs of colonization of Great Britain that forced the colonies to learn english by brute streght. Today we have to learn this language because of the inter-relationships that were pre-established, so we really can't fight against it, rather we have to understand the situation that we are, because this way we won't fall in ignorance and we won't let ourselfs be controlled by the language, or an imposed culture.
ResponderExcluirWell, as Gabriela said 'thanks God for reminds me to open this site and write something... =D
ResponderExcluirOk, the process of the language in whole world can be diversified and different in all those aspects. Let's check some facts in history: the majority of the countries are colonized by other coutries which already had them language... This process of colonization can be, sure, a kind of influence and the rwo languages will mix each other! So, i won't write a thousand lines of this point, but i think this 'blablabla' about 'oppressive languages' is something that have to be forget. There's no reason to be an oppressor... All the languages have influence by themselves! =)

ResponderExcluirThere were some languages in the past, like latin and spanish, that were the opressor's language in a certain time. Nowadays, we are living the influence and the domination of the english language.
ResponderExcluirBut which domination is that? It is the influence that the major language in the world have in another countries. This influence can be seen in movies, musics, books, comic books, scientific dissertations, etc.
This domination happens when the people from certain country, that dont have the english languge as an official language, have to learn the language as a tool for survive, because this is the reason to many people learn english: do not get lost in time.
There always were an opressor's language, and, in the future, we may have another opressor's language, maybe the mandarim.

It´s intresting to observe some aspects about culture: habits, language, values, knowledge...
ResponderExcluirSo, when we are talking about oppression and freedom we must open mind to undestand globalization. English is spoken everywhere in the world. Why? Have you ever asked your self?
The answer is not easy but the reflection move us, and that is the huge!
Understand globalization means the undestanding of world, society, history, economic...
Where we are going, what have we done, what can we do for the humanity betterment?
Whar means learning english?
"This is the language of the oppressor, but I need her to talk to you." (Adrienne Rich)
ResponderExcluirthis interesting phrase, that can express my opinion regarding the use of that language.
Nowadays knowing English has become essential requirement for entering the labor market.
I feel obliged to learn English because it is a world language, which is present in almost all areas of our daily life. The is full of English expressions, and easily allow foreign words are part of our vocabulary.
The big question is: we have a language rich in words, our culture must be preserved, and where we are to represent our country?
Many people like to overvalue foreign dispose of their own culture, away from patriotism and emphasizing for example the language of opressor.I'm aware of the importance of the English language, is satisfactory for me to interact with it, but frankly I prefer to use the language of my such country to invest in the education of our own language, because every strong nation has a strong language.

ResponderExcluirI agree with the Hooks's ideas because the language is a form of oppression, but to discuss this oppressions with a students of language is necessary use the language. But this is a consequence of the opressors to talk the english and do not of the language is oppressor per si. I think is necessary include the history aspects in the teach of the language to we understand the cause of the relation between english and opression.
ResponderExcluirI don´t know if the language can be considered a kind of opression. I know the some cultures can opress others, but the lenguage is a kind of comunication, and if you know the language you can to comunicat whit every body. What happen is the culture opression, the color opression, and even the self opression, the language is just a toll that every body can use.
